Is Cleaning Your Gutter A Real Drain?

If you’ve been searching for snorkels, wet suits, flippers and all things that float, then you would be more than aware of the extreme weather conditions the Sydney region experienced last week. During this time, Network Plumbing attended an extraordinary number of plumbing jobs involving blocked drains, stormwater drainage issues, blocked gutters as well as clogged grates and pits.  

Compounding these immense quantities of water, falling autumn leaves also found their way into gutters causing even greater plumbing headaches.  

So, it is little wonder why we were so busy as the build-up of leaves, small sticks and other debris caused a substantial amount of gutters to block and back up – leading to blockages, water damage and extensive repair bills. 

Although, we did notice that a lot of regular customers and those that search for a ‘plumber near me’ and have scheduled plumbing maintenance, faired quite well during the downpour.

However, it’s not just water that can cause ‘pocket pain’.

At the other extreme, dry or hot weather can also be just as menacing. Here’s a few examples: 

• Dry leaf build-up can cause a fire hazard 
• Blocked gutters can cause serious water damage 
• Mould growth (from water or moisture leaking) inside your property can cause serious health issues  
• Blocked gutters and grit are a breeding ground for vermin and pests 
• Damp debris left in gutters for a prolonged time can cause the gutter system itself to rot 
• Weight of debris can damage the structure of the gutter system.

Preventative maintenance and regular gutter-cleans are a must – especially before the next downpour brings all the plumbers back out again!  

As you scoop excess leaves and other debris from the gutters, always ensure that you have a sturdy ladder for support. Once cleared, ‘test drive your drains’ by washing your gutters down with a hose, checking for any leaks in the process.
