2. Check For Leaks

If possible, turn off your power supply to prevent any electrical hazards. For electric hot water heaters, you might also need to turn off the circuit breaker to avoid the heating element turning on unexpectedly.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have more burning questions about leaking taps, a blocked toilet or your plumbing system? Here are some plumbing solutions.

Can Network supply & install all hot water systems in near by Sydney

Our team of licensed plumbers can also perform conversions from electric hot water systems to gas hot water systems & a solar hot water system. You can freely choose the hot water system that is best for you, knowing our team can accommodate your needs.

Whether it’s electric, solar, an instant hot water system, heat pump or a gas hot water system you might be considering, We have the capacity to service and install multiple banks of hot water systems in commercial and strata applications. Simply call our office to schedule a time to discuss which heating method might be the best hot water system to meet your needs.

How often should you get your hot water system serviced?

No matter the type—solar, gas, electric, or heat pump—your water heater should undergo professional hot water system service every 1-2 years. Regular maintenance extends the system’s life, improves efficiency, and saves money in the long run.

Types of Hot Water Systems

Whether you have a solar hot water system, gas hot water system, electric hot water system, heat pump water heater, or any other type of hot water service, it is highly recommended to book your water heater for regular servicing by a professional plumber.

Factors Influencing Service Frequency

Factors like usage, location, and wear and tear determine service frequency. Key components such as the pressure relief valve, TPR valve, sacrificial anodes, and plumbing parts may need replacement over time. The repair cost varies by brand, so keep your water heater manual handy as some parts may be covered under warranty.

When to Service Your Hot Water System

If you’re unsure about your last service or have never had one, call our water systems expert for an assessment. Simple assessments and servicing typically take about an hour, but more extensive repairs might take longer.

Expert Plumbing Services at Network Plumbing

At Network Plumbing, our skilled plumbers ensure you understand the maintenance needed to keep your system running efficiently. Our expert team is proficient in servicing, repairing, and installing all types of water heaters—electric, gas, solar, and instant hot water systems. We can do it all.

What are the types of parts needed for a water heater repair?

TPR Valve

The primary function of the water Temperature & Pressure Relief Valves (TPR) is to release any build-up of excess tank water pressure. If your TPR valve should not be continually running… if it is, it may be an indication that it is time to have it replaced.

Sacrificial Anode

Located internally in hot water systems is the sacrificial anode. This “magnesium” anode is installed by the manufacturer to prevent the tank from rusting by attracting the minerals in our water supply to the anode rather than the hot water tank. Unfortunately after 5 years, the anode stops working as efficiently, your hot water system can begin to rapidly rust. In areas of ‘hard water,’ it may need replacing even sooner. Extending the life of your hot water system may also be as simple as changing the sacrificial anode with your scheduled regular service.

Thermostatic Mixing Valve

A thermostatic mixing valve (TMV) is designed to give you greater control of your hot water safety in the home or at work to ensure you cant heat water above the Australian standard. the TMV will mix cold water with the hot to make sure it does not exceed the legal water temperature setting in the home. You may want to set the maximum temperature supplied to the bathroom at 02 9023 3232 degrees while still maintaining that 50-degree temperature for hot water in the kitchen sink. TMVs are mainly used in commercial properties and strata blocks.

Pilot Light And Gas Pressure

These are important parts of a gas hot water system. If the gas pressure is too low then the hot water system will not heat up at an efficient rate. If the pilot fails to light then the gas hot water system will not produce any hot water at all. A trained and licensed plumbing professional will be able to clean or repair it, and also test your gas pressure to ensure your existing hot water system is working to its best ability.

How to choose the right water heater replacement?

The saying ‘stick with what you know’ may be true for some things, but hot water systems are not one of them. If your hot water unit is nearing the end of its life or your household energy costs have increased, it’s time to consider a hot water heater replacement. Review the following information and contact one of our specialists to determine the most appropriate new hot water system for you. We often provide the best recommendations that will save you money. A hot water system replacement should be considered with all relevant information.

First, decide how you’d like to heat your hot water supply and explore the types of systems available. For water heater replacement near you to address water heater leakage, trust our experts to guide you to the best solution.

Electric Hot Water Systems Sydney

An Electric water heater usually has lower upfront prices but incurs greater day-to-day running costs. An off-peak electrical system can save you money on a daily basis but requires a more expensive hot water tank in the initial installation phase, as you will need one with a greater storage capacity. Please note, that off-peak tariffs aren’t available to every Australian home and checking the price of tariffs is advisable.

The installation of your hot water service can either be inside or outside the home. You might even opt for an instantaneous hot water service that’s boosted with electricity. This combination will help with running costs when you’re considering all your options for a system replacement.

Generally, a four-person house will require 125-160 litres for a continuous flow hot water heater and 250-315 litres for an off-peak hot water tank.

Gas Hot Water Systems Sydney

If a natural gas connection is available for your house, installation of a gas hot water system may be desirable over an electric hot water system, as rates don’t vary as much and you can heat the water as you need it. Therefore, controlling supply prices as there are no great fluctuations in gas prices.

A gas hot water heater may also run on liquid petroleum gas (LPG) as an alternative to natural gas but this type of gas usually sees more expensive everyday costs than natural gas. The storage for these gas hot water systems is usually outside for venting requirements and usually has an energy star rating that’s economical.

A four-person household will require a tank between 135-170 litres.

Solar Hot Water Systems Sydney

Solar hot water systems are one of the most expensive hot water heaters to install but in the long run, the initial price can be offset by its lower running costs. Any Australian government incentives and rebates can also offset the initial purchase price. Solar hot water systems are a great option if you can install panels in an ideal location to take advantage of the Australian sun, energy efficiency is key.

A four-person household will usually require two panels and a water tank that holds between 300-360 litres.

Heat Pump Hot Water Systems

A heat pump system has a high energy efficiency rating. It works by extracting heat from the air to warm the hot water tank. Heat pumps can be integrated with the hot water tank and compressor together or split with the hot water tank and compressor separate.

However, this type of hot water system can be quite noisy due to the compressor. Hot water system installation for a heat pump should be in a well-ventilated area.

A four-person household will need a hot water tank capacity of 270-315 litres.

Hot Water Tank

Most types of hot water systems use a tank as the storage method. Whether it’s a Vulcan, a Rinnai or a Rheem hot water system, tanks usually last around 10 years but the ‘sacrificial anodes’ tend to last around 5 years.

These anodes attract minerals that would otherwise corrode the tank, meaning that they sacrifice themselves to preserve the longevity of the hot water system tank, reducing the need for a hot water replacement or hot water system repairs.

Continuous Flow Hot Water Systems

Continuous flow or instantaneous hot water systems only heat the water as you need it. These hot water systems, generally speaking, have a better star rating than a hot water tank heater. This form of water heating takes a few seconds or more. Particularly if there is some distance between the hot water system and the hot water taps. This water heater is available in either a gas hot water heater or a combined system with an electric hot water system.

How long will a hot water heater last?

Each method of heating will result in different expected lifespans. A good indicator of this is the manufacturer’s warranty, which serves as a general guide for your water unit. We have compiled an average to give you an idea.

To extend the life of your system and avoid water heater leakage, always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. Regular servicing of any hot water system will ensure your system is running efficiently, without any hidden surprises. This can reduce the chance of early hot water heater replacement, water heater repair, or unnecessary repairs. For reliable water heater repair, trust our experts to keep your system in top condition and prevent the need for frequent water heater replacement.

8-12yrs

Storage Tank System

The average lifespan of a storage tank is approx. 8-12 years. (depending on servicing and the quality of the water used).

10-12yrs

Continuous Flow System

A gas hot water system that’s a continuously flowing unit could last up to 10-12 years, approx.

10+yrs

Heat Pump Hot Water System

Your heat pump hot water system may last approx. 10 years plus.

15-20yrs

Solar Hot Water Systems

A solar system could last anywhere from 15 to 20 years plus, approx. (with regular 5-year service)

What is the lifespan & maintenance of solar hot water systems?

Different heating methods have varying lifespans, which can be estimated by examining the manufacturer’s warranty for your solar hot water system. Solar hot water systems generally have a lifespan of around 15 years, depending on maintenance and regular servicing.

To prolong the life of your system, it is important to adhere to the manufacturer’s guidelines. Regular servicing of your solar hot water system will ensure optimal performance, prevent unexpected issues, and minimize the need for early replacement or unnecessary repairs. We recommend scheduling a service for your solar hot water system approximately every 5 years.

What are the Benefits of Solar Hot Water Systems?

With Australia being the driest continent on earth, we have an average of 8 hours of sunshine on the east coast and up to 10 hours on the west coast. That is a lot of sunshine. With water conservation also at the forefront of our minds, it may be time to replace your old inefficient hot water system with a new solar hot water system.

How Does a Solar Hot Water System Work?

Solar hot water systems use solar collectors to capture energy from sunlight and transfer that energy to heat your water. There are two types of solar collectors available: flat panels and evacuated tubing.

Flat Panels:

  • Save space with the tank, which is usually roof-mounted.
  • Generally cheaper to install

Evacuated Tubing:

  • Offers a larger exposed surface area to capture more heat.
  • More efficient at transferring heat, especially in Australian conditions.
  • Easier to maintain with separate replaceable components.
  • Provides great performance in overcast conditions.
  • Requires less roof area.
  • Suffers less from corrosion

What Happens on a Cloudy Day?

Even on cloudy days, solar systems can still capture heat, though not as efficiently as during full sunlight. If the water isn’t warm enough, a booster (electric or gas) will activate when the water temperature drops below a certain level. The booster will switch off automatically once the water is warm again. Gas boosters are typically more environmentally friendly than electric ones.

Advantages of Solar Hot Water?

Compared to gas or electric hot water systems, solar systems have a higher initial purchase and installation cost. However, you will recover these costs over the system’s lifespan. Savings are best seen:

  • In larger households
  • In warmer climates
  • Where there is plenty of sunlight

Overall Benefits:

  • Long-term savings
  • Renewable energy resource
  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions

What are the hot water unit installation regulations?

Installations now require by law that each new hot water unit installation have a tempering valve when installed. This regulation is not only limited to new installations but if you make any alterations to your pipes, a tempering valve is required as well. Whether it’s during a renovation or not, a tempering valve needs to be installed along with any alterations. Tempering valves help to reduce your risk of burns, while it may be an adjustment, safety is key in keeping your family safe and burn-free. You may also consider the installation of a water pressure limiting valve at your meter assembly.

There is no DIY when it comes to installing hot water heater. Regulations only allow a licensed plumber to install your hot water heater. We are fully licensed and ready to install any system of your choosing. Our business is run on efficient service, with your hot water needs at the forefront of our minds. Don’t be stuck in cold weather with no hot water!

Which is the most energy-efficient hot water heater?

This is why, when it’s time for a system replacement or storage tank, our plumbing experts take the time to understand your needs and requirements.

However, generally speaking, if you have the ability to connect to a gas water heater, gas can be an extremely cost-effective energy source. As there is no wasted energy usage in storing the hot water, no unexpected costs with fluctuations in rates either.

In Sydney, the installation of solar hot water systems and solar panels has become quite popular and is another good option if you have the space on your roof to do so. If you have solar panels on your home, you also have the option to run your electric hot water instantaneous water heater through the power of the solar panels and run it on off peak electricity to save money and reduce household energy use.

Here's how solar hot water systems work?

Solar water heaters, also known as solar domestic hot water systems, offer a cost-effective means of generating hot water for homes in any climate. They utilise free sunshine as their fuel. These systems consist of storage tanks and solar collectors, with two types available: active (with circulating pumps and controls) and passive (without).

When do you need to replace a hot water heater?

Replacement of your heater will be necessary when you see signs of decline or if replacement is more economical than carrying out an existing hot water system repair. Sometimes hot water system repairs can be minimal if picked up early; however, if your heater has not been attended to regularly with a same-day service… the plumbing issues may be a larger problem and the most efficient service we could offer you is not heater repairs but a replacement instead.

Any signs of rust on and around the tank should be investigated, as well as any water leaks. Another major sign might be that you have no hot water, only cold. Discoloured or dirty water is also another sign that a breakdown could happen at any minute.

What are the different types of heating methods for hot water systems?

Hot water systems are available with 4 different sources of energy.

  • Electric instantaneous water heaters or storage tank
  • Solar hot water system
  • Heat Pump water heaters
  • Gas storage systems or instantaneous
What kinds of hot water systems are there?

Hot water systems have two main categories – Storage tank systems or continuous (Also known as instantaneous).

Storage Systems – Water is heated and stored in an insulated tank ready for use. Most gas, electric, solar and heat pump hot water systems use a tank. Heat pumps use a refrigeration cycle to extract heat from the surrounding air. Heat pumps generally save 60-70% of household energy use than other heaters. Even more if you have solar panels.

Continuous – Instant hot water heaters heat only the water required, and because there is no storage tank (they are also known as tankless water heaters) so they do not experience energy loss like storage systems. They operate on natural gas, LPG or electricity. Most models use gas, but electric instantaneous water heaters are available and used as a combination of gas and electric.

It has become very popular in Australian households to find other methods to heat water that are more environmentally friendly and reduce fossil fuel emissions.

Some ways you can do this is to install solar panels for renewable energy. With low running costs and off-grid energy during the day, you use less power as well as reduce your electricity bills.

Solar water heaters can also be installed, which come with their own set of panels.
