Saving Water At Home – In the Bathroom

Shay • October 28, 2014

In a typical home, almost half of all the water you use indoors is in the bathroom. This makes it a great place to start saving water, Here are some simple ways you can save water in the bathroom.

SHOWERHEADS

Change to a 3star showerhead and that can save you up to $50 to $100 a year in water and energy costs.

Install a flow controller if you don't want to change your showerhead. It doesn't change the look of your existing showerhead and provides an efficient flow.

TAPS

Choose a new 3-star tap which includes lever, mixer and quarter turn styles they use about half the amount of water as a standard tap.

Fit an aerator to your tap if you don't want to change its look. Aerators reduce the flow if water without reducing the pressure. They can reduce the amount of water you use by more than 50%.

Install a flow controller or restrictor in the tap body if you can't fit an aerator to your tap.

TOILETS

Change your single flush toilet to a 4-star dual flush toilet and you will save about 25,000 litres of water a year.

Make your single flush toilet more water efficient by adjusting the float valve in the cistern or installing a cistern weight. Adjusting the float valve will reduce the amount of water needed to fill your cistern for each flush. Using a cistern weight means you control how much water is used for each flush when you hold the button down.

Check your toilet isn't leaking. Place a small piece of dry toilet paper at the back of the toilet bowl and check that it stays dry until the next flush. Toilet cisterns shouldn't release any water between flushes. A leaking toilet can waste over 16,000 litres of water a year.
