The weather is warming up, the flowers are starting to blossom and for most people its time t start “spring cleaning”. Spring is the perfect time to assess your hoe’s plumbing system, so while your doing all the rest of your spring cleaning, check your plumbing system for any little problems you may have missed during the winter. Did you know that there are drainage and plumbing problems that you can avoid depending on the time of year? Here are some useful spring plumbing tips. Who knows – you could end up saving a lot of money.

* Check all of your taps for drips or leaks. Even leaks that seem small can add up and cost you a lot of money, and fixing them will provide an immediate benefit.

* Make sure all of your drains, particularly shower drains, have strainers that will prevent hair, soap and debris from getting in and creating clogs.

* Clean your shower heads of mineral deposits by unscrewing them and soaking them in vinegar overnight. After they have soaked, scrub them gently with an old tooth brush to get them totally clean.

* Check the hoses to your dishwasher, washing machine and icemaker and make sure they don't have any bulges or leaks. If any of the supply hoses are showing signs of weakness, or if they are more than 10 years old, have them replaced.

* Make sure your toilet flushes properly by checking if the button or handles stick when you press down on them. Replacing worn parts can help stop water leaks, which can impact your water bill.

* Pour a few litres of water into the infrequently used drains (including floor drains) to fill the trap and prevent odours from entering the house.

* Check and exercise the water supply valve under the sinks and toilets to prevent them from sticking.

* Inspect for slow leaks in your home by taking a water meter reading before bed. The next morning – making sure no water has been used overnight- take another reading. If the reading has changed, you could have a leak that may require repairing.

* Clean out your yard drains, gutters and downpipes.
