Each year, NSW Fire & Rescue attends approximately 4,500 residential fires in NSW with approximately 30% of them occurring in the winter months, and 47% of fires starting in the kitchen.
Coming into the cooler months we want to ensure you and your family are safe this winter. Here is a simple checklist to help you keep fire safe.
• Never ever leave cooking unattended.
• Have an adequate number of smoke alarms installed throughout your home and make sure that you test them regularly.
• Make sure you and your family know two safe ways out of every room in your home and organise a meeting point on the property.
• If you have a fireplace make sure the chimney is clean, and its properly ventilated. Always keep a screen in front of the fireplace when in use.
• Check electric blankets for damage or frayed cords before placing on the bed.
• Take care to keep curtains, bedding or flammable material away from portable heaters.
• Regularly clean the lint filter on your clothes dryer.
• Switch off all appliances when not in use at the power point.
• Extinguish candles when not directly in that vicinity and never put candles near flammable items.
• Store matches and lighters in a secure place and not accessible to young children.
• Avoid the use of outdoor heating inside your home as this can lead to a build up on carbon monoxide, which could be fatal.
• For all fire emergencies, please call 000 and evacuate the family to a safe place.
