Knowing the exact location of your hot water heater is crucial. It might be upstairs, downstairs, internal, or external.
If your hot water system is leaking, locate the control valve. For electric storage tanks, the valve is usually at the base of the tank. For continuous flow systems, it’s typically underneath the heater. If water continues to flow, locate and turn off the water meter.
If possible, turn off your power supply to prevent any electrical hazards. For electric hot water heaters, you might also need to turn off the circuit breaker to avoid the heating element turning on unexpectedly.
If you have a gas hot water system, turn off the gas supply until our specialist plumber arrives to assess and repair the issue.

Emergency Hot Water System Maintenance Sydney
Do hot water systems require maintenance? Absolutely – YES.
Hot water units are often hidden away, making them easy to forget. But because they work daily to supply hot water for showers, taps, washing machines, and dishwashers, they require regular maintenance to stay safe and efficient.
When servicing a hot water system with a storage tank, there are 6 main aspects that will usually be assessed by our team.
- Checking for any visible signs of water heater leakage
- Replacing the sacrificial anodes that are stored in your hot water tank if needs be
- Check the pressure and temperature of the water tank
- Check the static flow and working flow of the water pressure
- Check the electrical element at the base of the system
The maintenance for a continuous flow hot water system is slightly different. Our plumber will usually perform the following checks at a service to ensure your unit is efficient and running to its best performance.
- Check the fan function.
- Inspect the heat exchange.
- Test the gas pressure.
- Assess the isolation valve is working properly.

Matt came by to do the job for us, he was so nice and informative. Professional and efficient and nice to boot. I can't remember the receptionist's name but she knew exactly what I was talking about. So helpful. Thankyou.

Just had some Downlights upgraded with Network Reece could not be more helpful and professional
Ryan, Phil & Oliver were very professional, helpful & fixed my several problems.
Great work by Oliver Jake and Phil. Everything works perfectly
Matthew was swift to respond and diagnose the issue with our lack of water pressure. Initial estimates indicated the need to temporarily bypass a section of piping until we could locate the blockage before performing a more permanent solution. During testing for pipe location it was determined a faulty isolation valve was the culprit negating the need for the temporary solution and significantly reducing the cost of the solution. Matthew was courteous and professional throughout and once diagnosed correctly was a swift fix, would highly recommend.
Over two days of working outside to unblock a private stormwater easement affecting four properties on the same easement, Phil and Matthew brought us success. Happy to have them anytime. Great workers. Network you certainly have the right people for the job.

Frequently asked questions
Do you have more burning questions about leaking taps, a blocked toilet or your plumbing system? Here are some plumbing solutions.
Short answer: it’s okay for a few hours during planned maintenance or repairs, but if you’ve had no hot water for more than a day – especially in Sydney’s cooler months, it’s worth treating as urgent. Lack of hot water can impact hygiene, health, and your daily routine. Because every system and home setup is different, our licensed Sydney technicians assess your system on site to identify the real cause and recommend the best solution before quoting – so you’re not left guessing.
If your hot water has stopped working and it’s affecting your day to day, it’s best to contact a licensed emergency hot water plumber who understands Sydney systems. Electric, gas, and solar hot water systems all behave differently, and a proper assessment is the only way to know what’s wrong and how to fix it. Our Sydney team is ready to assess the issue on site and explain your options clearly before any work begins.
Yes, any active leak, especially around a hot water system, can be an emergency if it’s causing water damage, posing a safety risk, or affecting structural elements of your home. Even small drips from your hot water heater can quickly escalate. If you see water pooling, dripping from valves, or leaking around the base, it’s best to have a professional assess it promptly rather than waiting.
Sydney Water manages public sewer and main water infrastructure, not internal household hot water systems. For private plumbing issues, including hot water leaks or failures, you’ll need a licensed plumber. If there’s a confirmed public sewer issue affecting your property, Sydney Water can attend – but first a plumber usually identifies whether the problem is inside your home or on the public side.
If your water heater is switched off, cold showers are safe but won’t give you hot water. If the system has shut itself down due to a fault (like a leak or pressure issue), it’s best not to use it until it’s checked by a professional. Our Sydney plumbers can inspect the system and advise whether it’s safe to use or needs repair.
If your hot water disappears unexpectedly and doesn’t return within an hour or two, it’s usually a sign something needs checking. Tank systems might take longer to reheat, but consistent lack of hot water or frequent temperature swings suggests a component fault. Because every system’s specs differ, the safest way to know what’s happening is an onsite assessment from a licensed Sydney technician.
If your hot water system is gas or electric and there’s a leak or fault, it’s generally wise to turn it off until an expert has inspected it. This prevents further damage and keeps you safe. Our technicians can tell you exactly what to do when they assess the unit at your Sydney address.
Hot water usage depends on your shower head flow rate and the temperature, but a typical shower can use roughly 60 – 100 litres of water. If your hot water is limited or failing, long showers will drain the available supply quickly. A professional assessment helps us understand whether it’s a tank size, heating element, or pressure issue specific to your Sydney home.
Sudden lack of hot water can come from several causes: a failed thermostat or element, gas pilot issues, sediment build-up in the tank, or leaks. Every system behaves differently, and symptoms don’t always match the underlying problem. That’s why we come on site, to diagnose properly and explain exactly what’s going on before quoting any work.
If you’ve lost hot water but still have cold water, you can still use cold taps safely. If you’ve lost all water, that may indicate a bigger plumbing issue that needs urgent attention. In Sydney, a licensed emergency plumber is the right first call to identify whether it’s internal plumbing, your water heater, or something to do with the mains supply.
A quick first check is whether the system has power or gas supply (e.g., tripped switch, pilot light out). But beyond that, hot water systems are not like ordinary taps — there can be safety controls and complicated components involved. Rather than guessing over the phone, our trained Sydney technicians inspect the system on site and explain what they find in plain terms before any work or cost is committed.
An emergency repair is any fault that:
• risks water damage to your home
• affects health, safety, or sanitation
• leaves you without essential services (like water for bathing or washing)
• involves active leaks or flooding
Losing hot water unexpectedly, especially in winter – is one such scenario. Because each home and system is unique, we assess on site and provide clear options rather than open ended phone guesses.
A leaking water heater is urgent – even small drips can indicate pressure issues, component failure, or corrosion that can worsen quickly. Leaks near electrical components or gas fittings are especially time sensitive for safety reasons. We recommend having a licensed plumber assess the leak promptly so you know what’s safe and what’s required.
Common emergency plumbing situations include:
Burst pipes flooding floors
Severe hot water leaks or system rupture
No hot water in cold weather affecting health/safety
Sewage backing up into the home
Gas hot water unit leaks or smell of gas
These are the kinds of issues where delay can lead to property damage or health risk. In Sydney, the best first step is a professional assessment so the real cause is identified and addressed properly, not guessed.
