Lighting Services Network Electricians Handle Across Sydney

All fixed lighting installation and repair in NSW must be carried out by a licensed electrician. This covers everything from swapping a halogen downlight for an LED through to installing a new outdoor lighting circuit, a pendant above a kitchen island, or a bathroom exhaust and light combo. Network’s licensed electricians handle the full scope – on the same day, with upfront pricing before any work begins.

Still Running Halogens? Here's What It's Costing You

A standard 50W halogen downlight costs roughly $36 per year to run at average Sydney electricity rates, assuming four hours of daily use. An equivalent 8W LED costs around $5.76 per year for the same output. In a kitchen with ten downlights, that’s a difference of over $300 annually – before accounting for the fact that LED fittings last 15,000 to 50,000 hours versus 2,000 hours for a halogen globe.

The payback period for a halogen-to-LED conversion in a typical Sydney home is generally 12 to 24 months. After that, the savings are ongoing with no further outlay.

Beyond cost, halogens run at temperatures up to 300°C. That heat damages the cable insulation behind fittings over time – a risk in older Sydney homes where the wiring behind downlights has been running hot for decades. LED fittings operate at a fraction of that temperature and are rated for installation against insulation in the ceiling (IC-4 rated), which halogens are not.

Lighting Installation Sydney Faq

Do you have more burning questions about leaking taps, a blocked toilet or your plumbing system? Here are some plumbing solutions.

Can I install lighting myself in NSW?

No. All fixed lighting work – including replacing a ceiling light fitting, installing downlights, or wiring a new light switch – must be carried out by a licensed electrician in NSW. Changing a globe or a lamp shade is fine. Anything involving the fixed wiring behind the fitting is not. Unlicensed lighting work voids your home insurance and carries fines of up to $110,000 under NSW Fair Trading.

What colour temperature should I choose for LED downlights?

Warm white (2700K to 3000K) suits bedrooms and living areas – it creates a relaxed, residential feel. Neutral white (3500K to 4000K) suits kitchens, bathrooms, and task areas where clarity matters. Cool white (5000K and above) is typically too harsh for residential use and creates an unpleasant clinical feel. Most quality LED downlights now include a built-in switch between 3000K and 4000K. Network’s electricians will advise on colour temperature before installation if you’re unsure.

How many downlights do I need per room

As a general guide, plan for one downlight per 1.5 to 2 square metres of floor space, spaced evenly for balanced, glare-free coverage. A 20m² open-plan living area typically needs 10 to 14 downlights depending on ceiling height and beam angle. Rooms with higher ceilings need higher-lumen fittings or tighter spacing. Network’s electricians will design the layout as part of the site assessment.

My dimmer switch causes flickering - can you fix it?

Flickering on a dimmer is almost always caused by a mismatch between the dimmer type and the LED fitting’s built-in driver. Standard leading-edge dimmers designed for halogen loads are not compatible with most LED fittings. We replace the dimmer with a trailing-edge or LED-compatible model correctly matched to your fittings – resolving the flicker without replacing the lights.

Do bathroom lights need a special fitting?

Yes. Australian standard AS/NZS 3000 defines zones around baths and showers, each with minimum IP (Ingress Protection) ratings. Fittings directly above a shower recess must be IP65 rated or higher. Standard residential downlights rated IP20 are not suitable for bathroom zones. Installing the wrong fitting in a bathroom zone is a compliance failure and a safety risk. Network’s electricians specify the correct IP-rated fitting for each location.

Can you install outdoor lighting?

Yes. Outdoor lighting requires weatherproof fittings rated for external use, correctly installed and protected circuits, and RCD protection. Sensor lights, path lighting, pergola and alfresco fittings, and security floodlights are all part of the scope. Outdoor lighting circuits that share power with indoor circuits also need to be assessed to ensure the additional load doesn’t cause issues.

What lighting can Network install?

LED Downlight Installation – The most common lighting job in Sydney. We install recessed LED downlights in kitchens, living areas, bedrooms, bathrooms, and hallways – new installations and retrofits replacing halogen or fluorescent fittings.

Halogen to LED Upgrades – Running halogens in 2026 means paying up to five times more in electricity per fitting compared to equivalent LED output. We replace halogen downlights and transformers with integrated LED fittings that run directly on 240V – no transformer required. Most homes see a visible reduction in power bills after a full halogen-to-LED conversion.

Pendant & Feature Lighting – Pendant lights over kitchen islands, feature lighting in dining rooms, wall sconces in hallways – fixed lighting that needs to be hardwired by a licensed electrician. We install pendant and feature fittings, including supply of appropriate suspension hardware and ceiling rose installation.

Outdoor & Security Lighting – Sensor lights, pathway lighting, garden feature lighting, pergola and alfresco lighting, and security floodlights. Outdoor lighting circuits must be correctly rated and protected – we install weatherproof fittings to the correct IP rating and ensure all outdoor circuits have appropriate RCD protection.

Bathroom Lighting – Bathrooms have strict installation zones defined under AS/NZS 3000 that specify which fittings can go where and what IP rating is required near water. We install IP-rated downlights for shower zones, exhaust fan and light combos, and vanity lighting – all to standard.

Smart & Dimmable Lighting – Dimmable LED downlights, smart lighting circuits compatible with Google Home and Amazon Alexa, and scene-setting systems for living areas and bedrooms. We match dimmer type to fitting to avoid the flickering and buzzing that mismatched components cause.

Exhaust Fan Installation & Replacement – Bathroom and laundry exhaust fans are hardwired to a lighting circuit and must be installed by a licensed electrician. We install new exhaust fans, replace failed units, and upgrade to combination light and exhaust fan fittings.

Lighting Repairs – Fittings that flicker, lights that won’t turn off, a room that’s lost power to its lights entirely. We trace the fault – loose connection, failed fitting, wiring fault, or switchboard issue – and repair it correctly.

Why Sydney Homeowners Choose Network for Lighting Work

Correct Dimmer Matching – Every Time The most common complaint after a DIY or poorly executed lighting installation is flickering or buzzing on the dimmer. This is almost always caused by a mismatch between the dimmer type and the LED fitting’s driver. Network’s electricians match dimmers correctly to fittings before installation – not after a callback.

IP Ratings Done Correctly Bathroom and outdoor lighting has strict IP rating requirements under Australian standards. IP20 fittings are not suitable for bathrooms. Non-IP-rated fittings outdoors fail prematurely and create safety risks. We specify and install the correct fitting for the location – every time.

Ceiling Type Experience Plasterboard, concrete, and timber ceiling installations each have different requirements. Concrete ceilings – common in Sydney apartments and older buildings – require diamond core drilling at additional cost per point. We advise on this upfront, not mid-job.

How a Network Lighting Installation Works

Step 1 – Tell Us What You Need Call or book online. Let us know which rooms are involved, whether you’re replacing existing fittings or adding new, and whether you have a preferred fitting style or brand. If you’re not sure what you need, we’ll advise on site.

Step 2 – Site Assessment and Quote Your Network electrician checks ceiling access, existing circuit capacity, ceiling type, and fitting locations. You receive a fixed upfront quote before any work begins. For multi-room jobs, we’ll walk through the whole house before quoting.

Step 3 – Installation Fittings are installed, wired, and tested. Dimmer compatibility is confirmed before installation. Ceiling access is restored neatly. Old halogens and transformers are removed and disposed of.

Step 4 – Test and Sign Off Every fitting is tested before we leave. A Certificate of Electrical Compliance is issued for applicable work – including new lighting circuits and any work in bathrooms or outdoors.
