Network are the switchboard experts

Whether you have a 1970s ceramic fuse box that’s never been touched, a board that’s running out of circuits, or an upgrade triggered by a solar or EV charger installation, Network’s licensed electricians assess your current setup and carry out the work to standard. Every switchboard job includes a Certificate of Electrical Compliance – not an optional extra, a legal requirement in NSW.

We Have Your Switchboard & Home Covered

A switchboard upgrade is not a job to cut corners on. It’s the nerve centre of your home’s entire electrical system – every circuit, every appliance, every safety device runs through it. Getting it wrong creates compliance issues, insurance problems, and real safety risks. Network has been doing this work correctly for over 40 years. Every upgrade is carried out by a licensed NSW electrician, tested before we leave, and backed by a Certificate of Electrical Compliance.

Current with NSW Compliance Requirements AS/NZS 3000:2018 Amendment 2 requires RCD protection on every circuit in a modern switchboard. Type AC RCDs have been prohibited since May 2023. Building Commission NSW issues significant fines for non-compliant work. Every Network switchboard upgrade meets current standards – not yesterday’s.

Signs Your Home Needs A Switchboard Upgrade

Not every switchboard problem announces itself dramatically. Some boards quietly fail to protect a household for years without incident – until they don’t. These are the clear signs your board is overdue

Do You Require An Upgrade?

You still have ceramic or porcelain fuses – pre-1980s technology with no automatic fault protection

Your circuits trip frequently or you’re regularly resetting breakers

You’re adding a new air conditioner, EV charger, solar system, or granny flat and the board has no capacity

Your switchboard feels warm to the touch or has scorch marks around the enclosure

You’re renovating and the building inspector has flagged the board as non-compliant

You bought a pre-1990s Sydney home and don’t know when the board was last touched

Your board has no RCD (safety switch) protection – meaning a faulty appliance could cause electrocution with no automatic cut-off

Switchboard Upgrades Across Sydney

Network’s licensed electricians carry out switchboard upgrades across Sydney and Greater Sydney, including the Inner West, Eastern Suburbs, North Shore, Northern Beaches, Hills District, Western Sydney, and South-West Sydney. Older homes in these areas – particularly pre-1990 builds – are our most common switchboard upgrade jobs.

We regularly carry out switchboard upgrades across Parramatta, Surry Hills, Newtown, Balmain, Leichhardt, Bondi, Randwick, Chatswood, Hornsby, Manly, Dee Why, Penrith, Blacktown, Castle Hill, Liverpool, Sutherland, Cronulla, Strathfield, Ryde, Mosman, and surrounding areas.

Sydney switchboard upgrade FAQs

Do you have more burning questions about ceiling fans, switchboards or your lighting system? Here are some electrical solutions.

How a Network switchboard upgrade works

Step 1 – Inspection and Quote Your Network electrician inspects the existing board, assesses the number of circuits, checks earthing, identifies any asbestos or wiring concerns, and gives you a fixed upfront quote. No work begins without your sign-off.

Step 2 – Coordinating Asbestos Removal (Where Required) If the existing switchboard enclosure contains asbestos, common in Sydney homes built before 1990 – we arrange a licensed asbestos removalist before the electrical work proceeds. This is a legal requirement, not something to skip.

Step 3 – Board Replacement Power to the property is isolated. The old board is removed, the new enclosure fitted, all circuits terminated correctly, RCDs installed on every circuit, and circuit breakers labelled clearly. Most standard upgrades are completed in four to six hours.

Step 4 – Testing and Certification Every circuit is tested before power is restored. We issue a Certificate of Electrical Compliance – required under NSW law for all switchboard upgrades and essential for insurance purposes.

Benefits of one Network team

One team across all trades – If your switchboard upgrade uncovers wiring issues, an undersized service entry, or a hot water system that’s connected incorrectly, our team can address it. Network electricians work alongside our plumbers and air conditioning technicians – meaning observations across trades don’t fall through the cracks.

How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?

The clearest indicators are ceramic or porcelain fuses (pre-1980s technology), circuits that trip frequently, a board with no RCD safety switches, scorch marks or heat around the enclosure, or a board with no spare capacity for new circuits. If your home was built before 1990 and you don’t know when the board was last replaced, an inspection is worthwhile.

Is a switchboard upgrade legally required in NSW?

You’re not required to proactively upgrade a working switchboard. However, a licensed electrician is required by NSW law to bring the board to current standards – AS/NZS 3000:2018 – whenever significant electrical work is carried out on the property. If you’re adding a new circuit, installing solar, or connecting an EV charger, the board must comply before that work proceeds.

Does my switchboard contain asbestos?

It’s a real possibility if your home was built between the 1950s and late 1980s – particularly in inner-west Sydney, Western Sydney, and Wollongong. Asbestos cement sheeting was commonly used behind and around switchboard enclosures in that era. If present, a licensed asbestos removalist must remove it before the electrical work begins. Network coordinates this as part of the job.

Will I need to upgrade my switchboard for an EV charger?

Often yes. A 7.4kW home EV charger requires a dedicated 32A circuit with its own RCD protection. Many older Sydney switchboards don’t have the spare capacity or the correct protection type for this. Your Network electrician will assess the board during the EV charger site inspection and advise whether an upgrade is needed before installation proceeds.

Do I need to be home during the switchboard upgrade?

Yes. Power to the property will be isolated during the upgrade, so you’ll need to be aware and have someone on site. An adult needs to be present throughout the job to provide access and review the work before the electrician leaves.

What potential electrical work might I need on my home?

Full Switchboard Replacement

Replace an old fuse box or outdated board with a new enclosure, modern circuit breakers, and RCD protection on every circuit – compliant with AS/NZS 3000:2018.

RCD / Safety Switch Installation

If your board doesn’t have RCD (residual current device) protection, any fault in your wiring or appliances can cause electrocution. We install safety switches to current NSW requirements.

Circuit Breaker Upgrades

Old rewirable fuses and ceramic fuse holders don’t provide the protection of modern MCBs. We replace them with correctly rated circuit breakers that respond instantly to overloads and faults.

Additional Circuits

Adding a new AC unit, EV charger, home office, or granny flat? We add dedicated circuits with proper protection to a board that has capacity – or upgrade the board first if it doesn’t.

EV Charger & Solar-Ready Upgrades

A 7.4kW EV charger needs a dedicated 32A circuit with its own RCD. Many Sydney boards aren’t built for it. We assess, upgrade where needed, and get you charge-ready.

Asbestos Switchboard Enclosure Removal

Homes built between the 1950s and late 1980s – common across inner-west Sydney, Western Sydney, and Wollongong – often have asbestos cement sheeting behind the board. We coordinate licensed asbestos removal before the upgrade begins.
