Glebe takes its name from church land. In 1790 Governor Arthur Phillip granted 162 hectares — “the Glebe” — to Reverend Richard Johnson, chaplain of the First Fleet, and the area was later subdivided into one of Sydney’s most densely built Victorian suburbs. Its 19th-century housing stock is still largely intact, restored through decades of gentrification, and in the 1970s the government bought up a large precinct of terraces and cottages to create the Glebe Estate public housing. In the 2021 Census, 47.2% of Glebe’s dwellings were semi-detached homes such as terraces, 46.0% flats or apartments and only 5.0% separate houses.
